Finals Picture Comes Into Focus

On April 12, 2014, Team Maine travels to Pyramids DGC in Leicester, MA--the site of their 22-14 pummeling of Central Worcester in November.  This time, the reward is greater.  Up for grabs is the 2014 Team Challenge Cup.  Team Maine finished 2nd in 2013, faltering in the 3rd (final) round against Team Cranbury.  Team Maine rides a #1 seed into finals this year, however.

"This time, we have a first round bye," noted Head Coach Jason Toothaker, "I think that will help in the later round, as we won't be laboring as much as we were going into our 3rd round last year.  I'm looking forward to two well played rounds by Team Maine.  We'll play our best players, and we'll head home happy."

There are three teams that could potentially have the misfortune of facing off against Maine in the second round, Cranbury (defeated Maine 21-16 at Cranbury Park), Wickham (lost to Maine 23.5-9.5 at Maine), and Burgess (lost to Maine 14-12 at Maine).

Round 1:
Cranbury (5) vs. Burgess (4)
Crane (3) vs. Wickham (6)

Round 2:
Maine (1) vs. worst remaining seed
NASA (2) vs. best remaining seed

Team Maine Defends Home Turf Against Burgess; Claims Top Seed For Finals

Team Maine edged Team Burgess on Saturday, March 22nd to claim the #1 seed for NETC Finals, after posting a 5-1 regular season record.  Maine led the match 10-3 after the singles round.  Burgess responded with a 9-4 score in doubles, but it wasn't enough to steal the win from the home-dominant Maine squad.

The loss means Burgess needs a win next week at home against NASA to retain their spot in the A-Pool again next year.

"I would like to thank the players for all they have done all year," said Head Coach Jason Toothaker after the win, "they never gave up and consistently did what they needed to do for the good of the team, even if it meant sitting out a round."

Maine heads into finals with the #1 seed, guaranteeing them a first-round bye and the opportunity to play the weakest team to survive the first round.

Maine wraps up their season with another undefeated record at home (3-0) and 2-1 on the road, losing only to defending champions Cranbury Park.  Through 2 seasons in the A-Pool, Maine is 8-4 in the regular season.

Team Maine Squeaks Road Win Against Maple Hill

On Saturday, March 1st, Team Maine overcame a 3-point deficit at the break to edge out Team Maple Hill at Maple Hill DGC in Leicester, MA.  The teams played on 2 different course layouts, each incorporating holes from the Red, White, Blue and Gold courses.  After trailing 9.5-6.5 following the singles round, Maine took 5 of 8 matches in the second round for a 10-6 tally in doubles play; Maine won on the day, 16.5-15.5.

"As a team, we struggled a bit in singles," said Ryan Bourque of Team Maine, "in doubles, we played strong and did what we needed to do for the W."

The 1-point difference was the smallest margin of victory Maine has ever had in 3 years of NETC competition.  "What an exhilarating win," stated Head Coach Jason Toothaker, following the challenge, "taking these guys down at home is the boost we need down this final stretch.  We're setting things up very well for ourselves."

While the loss for Maple created an unfavorable scenario in terms of their ability to qualify for NETC Finals on April 12, the win by Maine cemented them as a contender for one of two first round byes in the finals tournament.  Maine would clinch the #1 seed with a NASA road loss to Burgess as well as a March 22nd win over Burgess.  Regardless of potential scenarios, Maine appears to be in the driver's seat for finals.

Notes:
  • Mike Cole emerges as the only player to record a singles win in all 5 team challenges this year.  He has beaten Bill Stewart (NASA), Bob Direnzo (CW), Whit Cooper (Cranbury), Shawn Mullen (Wickham), and Mike Zorovich (Maple Hill).
  • Jason Dore loses his first singles match of the season.  Kevin Gardner took the singles matchup, ending Dore's undefeated streak.
  • With the score 15.5-14.5 in favor of Maple Hill, players from both teams gathered in the parking lot awaiting the results of the Brendan Johnson/Jacob Fowlie vs. David Jenkins/Paul Fleming match.  The win by Johnson and Fowlie gave Maine the win and cause for raucous celebration.
  • Maine's next challenge is at home against Burgess at Woodland Valley DGC on Saturday, March 22nd.

Maine @ Maple Hill Preview

On March 1, 2014, Team Maine travels to Maple Hill DGC in Leicester, MA.  Following a big home win against Wickham, Maine looks to finish out its road record at 2-1 on the season.

"This won't be easy.  Maple is a team with remarkable depth and an enviable amount of home-course experience," Head Coach Jason Toothaker says, "I'd be lying if I said this wasn't a tough matchup for us.  We'll play aggressive, and we'll play smart.  Doubles will be immensely important; both in terms of matchups and execution on the course."

Frozen tundra: Maple Hill DGC Hole 1
Maine won their last match by a large margin, despite only being ahead by only one point after their singles round, thanks to a 15-2 shellacking in doubles.

"We had a blast in doubles against Wick. We knew it was close, and we needed to impose our will in doubles to pull out the win," said Brendan Johnson, "Chris [LeClair] and I did our part to make that happen.  Luckily, so did the rest of the team.  To beat Maple Hill, we're all going to need to do the same thing, albeit at their home course."

Considered to be one of the most scenic and challenging courses in the country, The course at Maple Hill is ranked #1 in Massachusetts, and is the home to the Maple Hill Open, presented by Vibram.

Team Maple Hill last faced Team Maine (then Team pHill) in March of 2012 at Pleasant Hill Disc Golf Course in Scarborough, ME.  Maine went on to win by a large margin, following a 12-0 doubles round.  "I know some of these guys are still thinking about the doubles skunking," said Toothaker, "that loss eliminated Maple from the B-Pool finals.  They are a better team now, and will have more than 12 players to throw at us.  Should be a good match."

Team Maple's heavy-hitters include (PDGA ratings in parenthesis) Justin White (952), Shaun LaForce (951), Greg Aucoin (963), Aaron Ala (rating unavailable), David Hoey (948), and Kevin Gardner (995).

Maine Whips Wick, 23.5-9.5; Dominant Doubles Preserves #1 Ranking in New England

On Sunday, January 26th, Team Maine--working with a mere 1 point lead going into their doubles round against Team Wickham Park--pulled out a blowout win following a 15-2 trouncing in the second round.  Despite the sun, temperatures held in the single digits, with wind gusts topping out near 30 mph.

Sean "Beefy" Stanton drives hole 18
"The weather was an equalizing factor," said Coach Jason Toothaker following the huge home win at Woodland Valley Disc Golf Course in Limerick, ME. "Once the wind calmed a bit, our course knowledge and experience gave us back that edge we have come to expect at home, especially on the Black Bear course."

Team Wickham's Jesse Carrieri
To say Maine's doubles dominance at home is remarkable would be an understatement.  Through 2 home matches against top teams, Maine has outscored its opponents by a mind-blowing 27-4 tally in doubles rounds.

Maine's Jason Dore bested the previously undefeated Jasin Bayer of Team Wick by a 2&1 score in singles.  Brendan Johnson upset the 1000-rated Jesse Carrieri by a 2&1 score as well.  Both of Team Maine's women, Sam Pease and Nicole "Pickle" Dionisio came up with singles wins against Kristi Bayer.

In doubles, Maine's Sean "Beefy" Stanton and Jacob Fowlie as well as the tandem of Darby O'Leary and Jason Dore tied for the hot round of the day, shooting 43's.

"We're perfectly comfortable slaughtering our competition up here," remarked GM Jim Tufts after the match, "then we send them back home to tell the tale.  It's our year, and other teams should be rightfully scared of us."

Team Maine and NASA are tied for first in the A-Pool, both with 3-1 records.  Maine has taken 63 percent of available points this year, compared to NASA's 50.  Maine also has the head-to-head advantage, following their home blowout of NASA in the first match of the season.

Cran-Buried: Team Maine Takes Tough Road Loss to Rival Cranbury Park

Maine lost a 10-9 singles advantage in the second round to fall to rival Cranbury Park on Saturday, December 7th at Cranbury Park in Norwalk, CT. Team Cran improved to a lifetime record of 22-0 at home, and Team Maine fell to lifetime 4-4 on the road. Despite the loss, Team Maine is still ranked #1 of the 8 teams in the New England Team Challenge A-Pool division.

"Tough loss, we had a lot of close matches that didn't go our way," said Coach Jason Toothaker following the loss. "Team Cran is nasty at home.  We gave it a hell of an effort, but these guys are rock solid on their own turf."

Jon Sellers takes an upshot from his knees on hole 15

Highlights for Team Maine included an improbable comeback singles win for Jacob Fowlie against 1000-rated pro golfer Jeff Cahill.  Fowlie was down 4 holes through 9 and edged out Cahill 1up to take the match.  In what could be considered the singles heavyweight bout of the year, Team Maine's top player Jason Dore defeated Cran's ringer Bobby Cowperthwait, who earlier in 2013 defeated many of the worlds top pros at the Greater Hartford Disc Golf Open (Wickham Park) in Manchester CT; including Paul McBeth, Will Schusterick, Devin Frederick, Paul Ulibarri, Jeremy Koling, and Geoff Bennett.  Dore won his match 1up against Cowperthwait.

In doubles, Jimmy Bouffard and Dave T-Bo defeated Greg Tavolacci and Whit Cooper with a tie for the team-best score of 48.  Darby O'Leary and Jason Dore also shot a 48, but lost in the final hole to the duo of Cowperthwait and Harry Green.

#1 Maine Travels to CT for Finals Rematch

Gallaher Mansion in Cranbury Park.
Team Maine (2-0) has a tough matchup on Saturday, December 7th against rivals Team Cranbury (1-1).  Having lost in the championship round in the Team Challenge Finals of 2012-2013 by a score of 9-6, Maine has a grudge to settle, and--in the words of General Manager Jim Tufts--"a point to prove."

Course Map

"The opposition isn't necessarily afraid at this juncture" said Tufts, "but we can change that with a win on the road against Cran."

Hole 1 Tee

Cranbury has proven to be tougher to beat at home than the Packers at Lambeau Field in the playoffs.  Sporting a tidy 21-0 home record, they exemplify dominance in the New England Team Challenge series over the long-term.  While Team Maine heads into Cran with a 1-3 road record in A-pool play, their confidence is at a new high.

"The bulletin board material writes itself in this case," noted Head Coach Jason Toothaker, "if people look at the numbers and see a 'David versus Goliath' scenario, it just plays into our hands."

While it is technically only one match, it will serve to catalyze a finals run, should Maine pull off the upset.  "We get this and we've got it all," said Tufts, "with only the cup to bring back to Maine in April."

The team will be making the 4-and-a-half hour trip to Norwalk, CT on Thursday night and Friday morning, using Friday 12/6 as a training day on the opponent's course.

Maine Rolls on the Road; Moves to 2-0

Leicester, MA - Team Maine held a 12-6 halftime advantage and coasted to a 22-14 win on Saturday at Pyramids DGC, handing the former B-Pool powerhouse Central Worcester their second A-Pool defeat in as many matches.

"They have a great team, [they] can definitely hang with anyone here in the A-Pool," said Head Coach Jason Toothaker on Monday, "I feel for 'em, they got a tough couple of matches to start their year." Toothaker is referring to the fact that the A-Pool newcomers were slated to face league champions Cranbury Park and Team Maine in consecutive matches.

L to R; Jeff Pendergrast (cW), George Economos (cW), Caleb Biggers (M) and Chris LeClair (M)

Among those winning both of their matchups on Saturday were Chris LeClair, Mitch Blodget, Brendan Johnson, Jason Dore, Sam Pease and Nicole "Pickle" Dionisio.  "Pickle and Sam were far and away the team's co-MVPs this weekend," stated GM Jim Tufts, "they did the very thing that exemplifies our organization.  They won."

Maine's newest addition, former Farm Teamer Ben Dunlap, coasted to a singles victory against Chris O'Connor and lost in a close doubles match against local superstars Jon Gordon and Troy Manni.  Dunlap was partnered with David "Gippy" Gipson, who also won his singles match, taking down Mark Valis.

"We have an electricity this year.  It's a winning attitude, and confidence is high right now," said Dave T-Bo Thibeault, "we keep this thing going and we'll have that cup in April."

What's next for Team Maine?

"A tough match against Cranbury." Toothaker says, "We have four weeks to prepare.  We need our players out there til then--out getting that cold-weather course time.  Beating Cran will hinge upon us being warmed up and loose.  Just like always, all the research and matchup strategy is no substitute for players outplaying their opponents in individual matches.  We will be prepared.  I like our chances."

Team Maine Heads to Pyramids DGC to Face Central Worcester Saturday

Team Maine plays its first of 2 consecutive road matches on Saturday, November 9th against team Central Worcester (cW) at Pyramids Disc Golf Course in Leicester Massachusetts.  Maine has, since their 21.5-6.5 stomping of rival NASA, picked up Maine disc golf legend and former Farm Team member Ben Dunlap.  Although cW romped through the B-Pool with an impressive 6-1 record in 2012-13 and has a roster featuring Nick Economos, Stephen Economos, Gary Cyr, Troy Manni and Dennis Parslow, Maine is still favored by many to win its first road match since February 12th, 2012 when it routed the Dam Team 21-7 at Tully Lake DGC in Athol, MA while in the B-Pool.

"We have a roster to be feared," stated Head Coach Jason Toothaker in a statement issued Friday, "The teams we are playing have great talent, but I think the depth of talent on Team Maine has improved from last year.  Our goal is to win the Cup, and I think we are all in the right frame of mind to make that happen.  We need this win against cW."

Pyramids DGC, Leicester MA

The Pyramids Disc Golf Course is home to Marshall Street Disc Golf, one of the larger online disc stores in the country.  Set near the Worcester Regional Airport, the mostly-wooded and quirky course was established in 1988 by Jason Southwick.  "Our opponents have logged thousands of rounds at this course," added Toothaker, "it's a mistake to underestimate anyone at their home course--especially these guys."

Toothaker predicted a victory in which Maine would win 57 percent of available points.

Team Maine Trounces NASA; Remains Unbeaten at Home

Saturday, October 26th, Woodland Valley DGC, Limerick, ME.

Team Maine's dominance at home continues as they defeat NASA 21.5-6.5 to extend their home winning streak to 6.  Scoring 77% of available points, Maine rolled with a 12-2 shellacking in doubles after leading 9.5-4.5 in singles play.

"Great play all around.  Some great matchups out there that went our way.  Maine came to play.  I'm proud of what our players did on that course today," said Head Coach Jason Toothaker, "a great way to start the season for sure."

In what could be considered the marquis matchup of the day, took down NASA star Daniel Marcus (3&1) in singles play.  In doubles, Sean "Beefy" Stanton and Jacob Fowlie mounted a comeback in the last 2 holes to force a playoff with Marcus and NASA newcomer Nick Liguori.  Maine won the playoff.

As both teams carry 2 women on their team, the captains were able to match up their women in a doubles showdown.  Marielle Mallar and Michelle "Smitty" Smith of NASA lost 49-51 to Team Maine's combination of Sam Pease and newcomer Nicole "Pickle" Dionisio.

October Matchup vs. NASA - Preview

In Team Maine's first matchup of the 2013-14 season on Saturday October 26th, the boys and girls from lobstah nation will be squaring off against the team that handed them their biggest loss of the previous season, 21.5-14.5.  Under a different set of circumstances this year, Coach Jason Toothaker believes his team will take the first match of the new season.

"Sure, losing by 7 points really stung.  It was nice to beat them in the 2nd round of the TC finals, but it was our first loss.  This time it's at our house.  We won't be embarrassed again."

It was the first loss Team Maine [then known as team Pleasant Hill] suffered, having breezed its way through B-pool play the previous year with a 5-0 record and a first place finish in TC finals.

Team NASA features a talented lineup including stars Jim Wills, Daniel Marcus and Jerel Davis as well as Mainers Jeff Conant, Marielle Mallar and Scott Mallar. Toothaker believes that course selection for singles/doubles play and strategic player matchups will be key factors contributing to a potential Maine win.

"Our guys are breathing fire right now, and everyone on the team rocked the Maine Players Tour hard this season--constantly improving their game.  It's the time of year where we get to have a good time with other teams from around New England, while at the same time retaining the killer instinct on the course that gives us cause for celebration."

Notes:
  • In 2012-13, Team Maine won 73% of available points at home.
  • In 2012-13, NASA won 42% of available points on the road.
  • Team Maine is 0-1 vs. NASA in the regular season and 1-0 vs. NASA in the playoffs.
  • Through B-pool and A-pool play, Team Maine is undefeated (5-0) at home.
  • Team Maine's overall lifetime record is 8-3 in the regular season.
